Omar Laldin brings over 17 years of R&D and industry experience, with expertise in the field of electric power systems, their controllers, and components. His impressive career has seen him in leadership roles in 5 startups, where he successfully managed budgets totaling over $12 million. His work spans diverse application areas, from electric vehicles used in aerospace, marine, and terrestrial applications to heavy-duty vehicles used in capital industries.
Previously, Omar served as the Sr. Director of Powertrain at Nikola Motor Company, managing the budget required to build world-class powertrain testing facilities as well as to grow and overseeing a powertrain team allocated with 21 direct reports, along with contractors and temporary employees. He led significant strategic initiatives, managed key suppliers, and was instrumental in leading the powertrain development to production within a year.
At Ampaire, Inc., Omar held the position of Director of Powertrain Engineering, where he successfully grew the Powertrain Team from its inception and led the development of the Powertrain system architecture. In this role, he demonstrated not only exceptional technical prowess, designing and building a flight-capable electric powertrain system on a shoestring budget, but also a keen ability to interact with external-facing entities, including government bodies, suppliers, universities, etc.
At Faraday Future, Inc., Omar's technical responsibilities as the Lead Electromagnetics Engineer revolved around extensive analysis and design of high-powered IPM machines (several 100 kW) for high-volume production, and novel production-intent motor designs for large, medium, and small vehicles. He notably designed a high-powered motor for a FormulaE application, increasing torque and power densities by significant margins.
Before entering the industry, Omar received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology, and a Bachelor of Engineering and Society from McMaster University. His diverse educational background and passion for innovation underpin his unique approach to powertrain development, making him a valuable asset to the core team.
Our team is spearheaded by Tarryn MacPherson, a gifted Electrical Powertrain Systems Expert with a deep background in Electrical Engineering. After completing a BASc in Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Tarryn ventured into a rewarding career focused on aerospace and electric vehicle product development and testing. She has a notable record in leading multi-functional teams in tech startups and transforming ideas into actionable plans.
During her time at Ampaire, Inc., she acquired hands-on experience developing an electric aircraft for regional and short-haul flights. Her notable achievements include using Simulink to establish a CAN communication and control platform for the electric powertrain, creating a user dashboard for real-time powertrain monitoring, and developing a real-time fault detection and response strategy for various failure conditions. She also crafted custom CAN libraries, implemented hardware changes to improve system performance, and conducted various tests to ensure optimal function of the system.
As a Sr. Technical and Operations Engineer, Tarryn MacPherson expertly navigated stringent project requirements, leading the schematic and layout design of high-performance PCBs. Emphasizing cost-efficiency, reliability, and compatibility, she implemented AUTOSAR standards and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles. Coupled with robust firmware development and rigorous testing, Tarryn ensured that the PCBs delivered met all performance and stability criteria, even under extreme conditions. Benefit from her insightful PCB design approach to boost your product's performance and reliability.
In a stealth startup, Tarryn MacPherson was pivotal in designing and developing the first prototype of a light electric vehicle. She envisioned and validated an encompassing 3.6 kW LEV powertrain, incorporating custom inverter, BMS, powertrain controller, and more. She introduced user-centric innovations, such as a USB-C compatible charger and a Bluetooth 4.0 user controller, enhancing user interface and convenience. Benefit from her expertise in LEV powertrain systems for your cutting-edge vehicle design needs.
Among her several recognitions, Tarryn has won several Gold and Silver Medals in sprint kayaking issued by BC Summer Games, and is a proud recipient of the Canada DS4Y Grant and the Capstone Project Faculty Award from UBC Applied Science Faculty. She also holds a pending patent for an innovative tool for electronics testing and diagnostics. Tarryn’s extensive background in the field, alongside her dedication to innovation and development in electrical powertrain systems, make her a valuable asset to our core team.
